Professor’s Work Displayed at World Stage Design 2017
Scenic design by Assistant Professor of Theatre Tom Burch is in exhibition at the World Stage Design 2017 conference in Taipei, Taiwan. The international conference, which convenes every four years, is being held July 1-9 and includes performances, workshops, exhibitions, and seminars.
Burch’s design for The Hypocrites’ production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance was selected for inclusion in the professional exhibition, housed at the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts at Taipei National University of the Arts. Based in Chicago, The Hippocrates have taken the production to venues across the United States, from Boston to San Francisco. A review last summer in DC Metro Theatre Arts praised Burch’s design:
“Audiences can know it is in for something completely different the moment they step into the Mulitz-Gudelsky Theatre Lab space thanks to the vision of Scenic Designer Tom Burch. There are blinking tiki torches and strung overhead string lights (designed by Heather Gilbert), with a wooden boardwalk, a life guard station, coolers and even some some kiddie pools. There are plenty of beach balls to thrown about and the audience is expected to take part….It is truly interactive.”
