Professor To Join AIA Virginia Conference Panel
Associate Professor of Architecture and Urban Design Nadia Anderson will be a speaker/panelist for a session at Architecture Exchange East, the annual conference of the Virginia chapter of the American Institute for Architects (AIA Virginia). The conference, “Foresight 2020,” is being held virtually this year, October 2-November 6.
Anderson’s session, “Unconventional Clients,” is part of the Young Architects Forum (YAF) series, “The Empathic Architect,” peer-led discussions about designing with empathy and practicing with intentionality. It will take place on October 27. From the session description:
Unconventional problems require unconventional thinking. For young professionals, charting an alternative path from a traditional firm is filled with uncertainty–looking for clients with unique project ideas, figuring out non-traditional design processes, and even figuring out how to find money for projects and get paid outside of typical structures. Coming from academia, community development, nonprofit design, and creative entrepreneurship, our panelists will share their experience and expertise in finding ways to impact communities and promote justice outside of traditional architecture practice.
Anderson will speak to her research into structures of power in practice and how she implements alternatives in pedagogy and practice that are more equitable and inclusive.
