How did you first get interested in art?
I’ve been interested in art my whole life but didn’t start considering it as a serious career option until high school. My family is very supportive of the arts, so I grew up in a creative household that was always working on some sort of random project. From DIY-ing Halloween costumes to editing cheesy music videos for school assignments, I was naturally inclined to make things. I worked on a lot of art projects with my dad growing up, so that likely influenced my career path much more than I initially realized. He double majored in Art and Computer Science, and my brother majored in Computer Science, so it seems his kids have oddly carried on each of his different interests.
What kind of career do you hope to have?
Since I have a wide variety of interests in visual art, I think that I would find satisfaction in almost any artistic career. But ideally I’d like to pursue something in digital media, specifically in video editing and motion graphics. I’m the kind of person who likes to do a little bit of everything though, so I will likely be pursuing personal projects on the side.
What is your favorite thing about the Department of Art & Art History?
I love how the Department of Art & Art History has cultivated such an intimate community with exciting opportunities. The small size of the college allows students to form meaningful, personal relationships with faculty and peers alike. It is great for receiving feedback on work and also getting to view/participate in the work of so many other talented artists.
Do you participate in any community activities or work in the Charlotte arts community?
I work in the Department of Art & Art History as a Peer Mentor. As a part of my role, I help out with department events and host office hours tailored to assist newer students in navigating their experience in the College of Arts + Architecture. I generally offer advice on portfolios, classwork, and academic planning. I am also a Graphic Designer for the chapter of Women in Animation on campus, which advocates for underrepresented identities in the animation industry and educates students on important industry information.
What is one thing that you have gained from the Arts + Architecture Honors Program?
I am in the Arts + Architecture Honors Program, which has numerous academic benefits. It has helped me gain scholarships, priority registration for classes, and ambitious extracurricular opportunities. I have also gained lots of insight into other art fields, as the program stresses interdisciplinary study.
Can you talk about your experience as a scholarship student?
Within the Department of Art & Art History, I am a recipient of the MacKillop Scholarship. This type of support has benefited my academic experience by easing financial pressures and broadening my opportunities within the college. I have also received scholarships that helped me study abroad in Ireland with the art department. In general, these awards have significantly enhanced my artistic and educational journey.
When you are not in class, studying, or working, what do you like to do for fun?
When I am not making art myself, I am generally consuming art instead. In my free time I watch movies, cartoons, and read books. And, of course, I always love a good nap.
