BA in Architecture

2024

How did you become interested in Architecture?

I grew up building things with my father, as he was a carpenter. After high school, I joined the Columbia Fire Department and was a fireman for 10 years. During that time, I also ran a handyman company and did lots of renovation work. Since then, I have flipped a few homes and really enjoy the process of designing and reimagining spaces. This love of design led me to get my degree in architecture.

What kind of career do you hope to have?

Long term, I plan to be a real estate developer.

What is your favorite thing about UNC Charlotte and the School of Architecture?

I have enjoyed seeing my fellow students’ skills and dedication, which makes me want to improve my ability.

As a transfer student, do you have thoughts about the benefits of the new transfer agreement between Central Piedmont Community College and UNC Charlotte? Why is that a good thing for students?

As a nontraditional student (I’m 34), Central Piedmont made it possible to begin taking classes while still working and raising a family. It also allowed me to see if architecture would be a viable career path without committing to a traditional architecture school. Furthermore, taking less expensive classes at Central Piedmont allowed me access to education where it would have been far more burdensome otherwise.

When you are not in class, studying, rehearsing, or working, what do you like to do for fun?

I often go to the mountains or the Whitewater Center with the family to hike and be outdoors. I also enjoy working on houses and doing projects.
